Jody loves to make jokes. When he makes a joke, everyone laughs. Tip wishes he could be as good as Jody. So he plans a joke for Tessa, but instead of making her laugh, she ends up crying. So Tip understands one thing about jokes: the good ones make you laugh, and the bad ones are when they hurt someone.
