Six months after the death of their father, the Dingwell children, Irene, Pauline, Eric, Catherine and Paul, still dream of going to the Great North, a desire that cannot seem to be feasible. Since the death of her husband, their is no longer the same and this is felt by the children. While she only pays attention to the dogs in the pen, she no longer comes into the house, nor does she take care of her baby or the other children. Upset by their lack of food, the children have a relationship in which panic and anger reign. Even going to the cemetery to visit their father becomes unattainable when they are prevented from doing so by their mother who fears the Shadows.
