What is the point of eating? Where does our food go? These are all questions that you may be facing from your children. I have tried to cover the important steps that lead food to be transformed into nutrients. The food then goes through a first stage of chewing to be reduced. Swallowing allows it to pass to the stomach through the esophagus. Inside the stomach, gastric juices break down the food. In the small intestine, digestive juices (from the pancreas and liver) break down the food into nutrients that can be released into the bloodstream. The molecules that are too large are evacuated by the large intestine. It is the breakdown of the nutrients that releases the energy needed to move and operate the organs.
