Gender equality is a fundamental principle. The Education Code emphasizes that the values of equality must be taught starting in elementary school. Indeed, stereotypes are internalized from a very young age. Girls and boys conform to what is expected of them based on their gender. Girls and boys are equal, and the law protects this equality. Stereotypes undermine this equality and confine everyone to a specific role. Students must understand that they have the right to be respected, to play the sports they want, to pursue the career of their choice, and so on. Confining girls and boys to certain roles results in inequalities in adulthood in terms of pay, the types of jobs available, perceived intellectual abilities, and so on.
