Richard Hammond buries himself in a mine beyond the reach of any communication signal. Drawing inspiration from elephants’ ability to communicate through the ground using infrasound, engineers have invented a system for communicating through rock. The episode then focuses on bats’ ability to navigate in the dark, enabling a blind cyclist to ride through the forest. Richard then meets an owl that flies extremely quietly and could make any fan or airplane quieter. Finally, sea lions’ remarkable whiskers have inspired an autopilot system for road vehicles.
