Héritage et avenir

Moko is a sacred gift, and tattooing is only a tiny part of this unique, spiritual process, intimately linked to the individual. There's a big difference between a tattoo that's the result of copying and Moko, which is more a creative and symbolic process. The debate sparked by Sally Anderson, a woman of European origin married to a Maori man, having sported a Kauae (chin tattoo) on television is an example of what the Maori people are facing. The community took it very badly and reacted with a lot of hatred on social networks. The debate generated by this cultural appropriation has nevertheless prompted Maori women to assert themselves by getting a Kauae done.
