Nos histoires, notre histoire: L'école de la résistance, Penetanguishene - 1979

On September 3, 1979, an illegal French secondary school opened in makeshift premises in Penetanguishene. It was a rebellion orchestrated by Franco-Ontarians tired of feeling like outsiders in their own so-called bilingual school, Penetanguishene Secondary School. On September 3, 1979, École secondaire de La Huronie was inaugurated. This school of resistance would welcome 54 students from grades 9 to 13. It was the beginning of a long struggle that would last ten years. It would take demonstrations, political maneuvering and even a court case to win the day... and a real French high school in Penetanguishene.
