La chaîne alimentaire

After learning about the 3 main diets, the aim is to understand the food relationships between animals. Students learn that a food chain is a sequence of living things in which each one eats the one before it before being eaten by the one after it. The food chain usually starts with a plant and then a vegetarian or omnivore and then only carnivores or omnivores. The animals at the end of the food chain are super predators. A food chain has at least three links and the arrows mean 'is eaten by'. For example: the blackberry is eaten by the field mouse which is eaten by the fox. Food chains are interlocking and form food webs.
